About
Kayla Brown and Dan Hurwitz, the duo that has brought you extremely niche live comedy shows for the past three-ish years, will present their latest artistic endeavor, the award-eligible This Is Spinal Injury, followed by one of their aforementioned niche live comedy shows.
The movie, which premiered at Local Sightings Film Festival in September 2021, follows the exploits of a troupe of disabled comedians attempting to put on a comedy show during a global pandemic.
The live show following the film will feature, in addition to Brown and Hurwitz, local comedians Michael Bellevue, Melissa Thomas, Lindsey Muszkiewicz, Laura Lyons, The Magic Astrologer, Howie Echo-Hawk, and Gretta Gimp. The movie begins at 7pm, followed by a live show at 8pm.
About the film:
A mockumentary documenting the greatest, most accessible, yet simultaneously least-commercially-viable comedy show, featuring Pacific Northwest comedians with disabilities. All they need is a venue, a videographer, lights and tech people, a marketing person, a graphic design person, a host, a person to get them coffee, a social media expert, and most importantly, of course, Seattle-area comedians with disabilities.

About the artists:
Laura Lyons
Laura Lyons started comedy in Davenport, Iowa 2015. In 2016, she took a year off to focus on recovery from substance abuse. Laura returned to the stage in 2017 in Denver, Colorado and has been performing ever since. She moved to Seattle in pursuit of comedy and a legal education and she believes that every city’s police force should be abolished.
Melissa Thomas
Melissa Thomas is a Midwest comedian and writer. She cut her teeth in standup while working at the Tempe Improv in College. After kids she took to the stage again, winning second at the Peninsula Bevco’s comedy competition. Which probably means you won’t see her on Netflix specials anytime soon… but her folksy offbeat humor has been a shiny welcomed new light in the Seattle comedy scene.
The Magic™ Astrologer
The Magic™ Astrologer (He/They) is an astrologer and tarot reader (TheMagicAstrologer.com) who moonlights as a medical student. They like long-walks on the beach and trying to make their cat, Magic™, a cultural icon. Per their most recent psychological evaluation, they are “polite and friendly” but also tends “to view himself in an overly positive manner with little willingness to admit his shortcomings.” Disclaimer: None of what The Magic™ Astrologer says is meant to be taken as fact or seriously and he can not be held liable for any statements made for comedic purposes.
Michael Bellevue
Michael Bellevue is an avid sailor, reader and writer of Russian, standup producer, avid volunteer who’s produced several fundraisers for non profits, comedian, chess player since age 5, linguistics fan, and, self-evidently, Black. He volunteered at a food bank for 15 months during the pandemic.
Lindsey Muszkiewicz
Huge lesbian, full-time wheelchair user popping anti-depressants, former inspiration porn star, and professionally disabled.
Howie Echo-Hawk
Howie Echo-Hawk is a Queer, nonbinary “comedian” and all around Native person.
Gretta Gimp
Gretta Gimp has the disability Cerebral Palsy. She has been doing “stand up“ since 2016. Her humor is self deprecating and cathartic. She finds humor to be the best way to educate people about disability topics and believes that having a disability is just an ordinary fact of life—not anything extraordinary or inspirational.
Dan Hurwitz
Dan Hurwitz is a comedian, writer, and filmmaker. In 2019 he was a semifinalist in the Standup NBC national comedy competition. This Is Spinal Injury is his first film.
Kayla Brown
Kayla Brown is an activist, PhD student, and co-producer of The Disabled List. This Is Spinal Injury is her first film.
