The Little Match Girl
Jun 14, 2012
(Jean Renoir, Jean Tédesco, France, 1928, 40 min)
With live accompaniment by Cricket & Snail!
Please join us for a special screening of Jean Renoir's silent movie classic “La Petite marchande d’allumettes” (The Little Match Girl, 1928), accompanied by an original music score composed by James Carlson and performed live by violin/accordion duo Cricket and Snail (a.k.a. James and Lucie Carlson). Carlson’s score captures all the charm, humor and poignancy of this surreal retelling of the Han Christian Anderson tale. In addition to playing their usual instruments, Lucie will double on mandolin and James will grace the toy cymbals! The screening will be preceded by 30-minutes of French, klezmer, classical and Celtic music performed by the duo.
The violin-accordion duo Cricket & Snail transport their listeners to many appealing places in the world, such as a Parisian café, a Jewish wedding, an opera scene or a folk dance in Ireland! Their unique instrumental combination is very expressive and often surprises listeners who do not expect the sweetness, richness and power these instruments possess when combined by skilled musicians. In addition to performing, Lucie and James Carlson compose or arrange most of their repertoire. A native of the Czech Republic, Lucie has two masters degrees in violin performance and has played with major symphony orchestras. James has a Ph.D. in composition and is a professor at The University of the South, Sewanee, TN. While both classically trained, James and Lucie are now more attracted to music and venues that allow them to connect more directly with their audiences; they feel equally comfortable performing in a concert hall, café or on the streets of Prague.
