Nasty Baby

Nov 06 - Nov 12, 2015

(Sebastián Silva, 2015, United States, 101 min)

Chilean director and cinephile favorite Sebastián Silva returns both behind and in front of the camera with his sixth feature. Brooklyn trio Polly (Kristen Wiig), Freddy (Silva), and his boyfriend Mo (Tunde Adebimpe) decide to have a baby. Silva’s flair for barraging his characters with supremely awkward social situations is on full display. A bizarrely hostile neighbor known as “The Bishop” proves to be more than just a pest, ineffectual sperm is a bother, and the weight of the decision to bring a person into the world begins to gnaw at them in different ways. Punctuated by endearing appearances by Silva’s actual cat and marked by a distinctively unexpected turn in tone and direction, Nasty Baby serves as an examination of the more unpleasant side of relationships while extruding the ramshackle humor that binds the three friends.

Premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and won the Teddy Award for best LGBT-themed feature film at the Berlin International Film Festival.
