Heaven Knows What

The Safdies' latest, biggest, and most fraught star to date is Arielle Holmes, whose real life struggles with homelessness and heroin addiction on the streets of New York inspired Heaven Knows What. Arielle plays a version of herself in the film, with the rest of the cast fleshed out by her real friends and acquaintances, including the endlessly wired Buddy Duress. One of the only professional actors is Caleb Landry-Jones (X-Men: First Class, Byzantium) who portrays her alluringly nihilistic boyfriend, Ilya.

 In 1971 hundreds of young people occupied 85 acres of buildings, woods and ramparts of an abandoned military base in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark. Finding it politically unpopular to evict the young settlers, the Danish government declared Christiania a "short-term social experiment". Over forty years later, Christiania is the oldest still existing squat in Europe. How did that happen? Winner - Best Documentary Feature, STIFF 2015.

Director Myroslav Slaboshpytsky's feature debut also declines to subtitle the sign language used by all characters. Instead, the angst and fury of adolescence plays out in a series of terrific performance, all portrayed by deaf actors. The results have been earned universal critical acclaim and multiple awards at Cannes.

Puget Soundtrack: Cock & Swan presents Only God Forgives

Cock & Swan will be the first Puget Soundtrack band to combine live scoring with pre-recorded elements — a technique they hope will allow them to focus on the highly rhythmic pacing of Only God Forgives. While Refn's followup to Drive is certainly short on dialogue, it doesn't skimp on either visuals or action. The blood-soaked revenge pic was a critical Hindenburg upon release, but could the right musical accompaniment be all it needs to soar?
