About
The talking-head documentary is revived with stubborn, prolix determination by a brood of Etruscan elders who gather at a modest hunting cabin to speculate about the existence of one Mario de Marcella, who is said to have lived a recalcitrant, hermetic life within a forested cave in Tuscia, as withdrawn from the pack as the film’s eponymous male boar. Il Solengo’s narrative is thus hinged to oral tradition, Italian style, spun from the yarns these aged hunters deliver in both acerbic and plaintive testimonies, sitting fireside while the pasta sauce simmers. The notion of a reliable narrator is thrown into doubt, though just what drove Mario underground remains a mystery that haunts this ultimately melancholic fable.
