Curated by Jon Behrens
Copresented with Interbay Cinema Society
Curated by Interbay Cinema Society’s Jon Behrens, this survey of a major West Coast experimental film collection brings together a variety of filmmakers and styles across generations, from Tomonari Nishikawa’s abstract documentation of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station impact on the immediate environment, sound of a million insects, light of a thousand stars (2014), to Cauleen Smith’s collage investigation of racism and popular culture, Chronicles of a Lying Spirit by Kelly Gabron (1992), to Cathy Lee Crane’s * modern myth Adrift (2009) to Christopher Harris’s * indictment of the racialized and sexualized gaze in Reckless Eyeballing (2004). The program also includes films by San Francisco filmmaker and expanded cinema performer Kerry Laitala,* New York based filmmaker and installation artist Bill Brand, as well as Canyon Cinema founder Bruce Baillie’s first film, from 1961.
* Filmmakers Crane, Harris and Laitala are also recipients of Interbay Cinema Society Lightpress Grants.
