Workshop #1: An Exploration of Shadow Puppetry
Instructors: Cassandra Bray & Zane Exactly
Start Time: 1pm PST
Duration: 1 Hour
Puppetry artists Cassandra Bray & Zane Exactly of Shadow Girls Cult will lead participants through a 1-hour workshop, using overhead projectors and a projection screen to explore the fundamentals of shadow puppetry manipulation and construction.
This workshop will guide participants of all ages on how to transform simple materials into unique and bold shadows. Experiment and play with us as we explore different shapes, textures, colors and characters to breathe life into new stories and ideas.
This workshop is a fun opportunity for children and families looking to try shadow puppetry for the first time. Feed your curiosity and creativity, while learning how to use your body and other materials to create cinematic imagery.
Workshop #2: Cinematic Shadow Puppetry Techniques
Instructors: Cassandra Bray & Zane Exactly
Start Time: 3pm PST
Duration: 1 Hour
Puppetry artists Cassandra Bray & Zane Exactly of Shadow Girls Cult will lead participants through a 1-hour workshop, using overhead projectors and a projection screen to explore cinematic shadow puppetry techniques.
Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to closely observe and engage with different cinematic techniques, including: framing, fades, transitional overlays, dissolves, match cuts, and cutaways. Participants will refine their story-telling techniques while exploring the different ways that puppetry and cinema are intertwined.
Zane Exactly
Zane Exactly (they/them) is a non-binary puppeteer, theatre maker and visual artist with a BFA in sculpture and printmaking. Some of their recent projects have included: shadow puppetry; projection design; puppet design and fabrication; set and prop design; mask design; miniature fabrication; and performing. They have also worked for Thistle Theatre, a local Bunraku puppet theatre company, since 2013 as a puppeteer, repair person, and show builder. They are thrilled to be starting their third season as “Possum” in “Look, Listen and Learn,” a local Children’s YouTube series.
Cassandra Bray
Cassandra Bray (she/they) is a multidisciplinary theatre artist and shadow puppeteer with a BA in Theatre and Education. Some of her favorite recent projects include: Intiman Homecoming Festival (Stage & Production Manager); The Fool (Puppetry Design, Puppetry, Co-Direction); Water is Easier to Swallow (Puppetry Design, Puppetry, Co-Direction); and We Go Mad (Puppetry, Lighting Design). Cassandra and Zane were recently featured in Chinese Theatre Works’ International Shadow Slam, and have had the great fortune to perform their original work, “Giant Woman” at the 2019 National Puppetry Festival.
