CFFS 2023 – Literal Sunshine (Ages 8+) [Hybrid]
Watch online: Feb. 3–12, 2023
Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forum’s ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. All doors in Northwest Film Forum are non-motorized, and may require staff assistance to open. Our upstairs workshop room is not wheelchair accessible.
We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter. Also available at the front desk is a Sensory Kit you can borrow, which includes a Communication Card, noise-reducing headphones, and fidget toys.
The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject!
If you have additional specific questions about accessibility at our venue, please contact our Patron Services Manager at maria@nwfilmforum.org. Our phone number (206-329-2629) is voicemail-only, but we check it often.
Made possible due to a grant from Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Sensory Access, our Sensory Access document presents a visual and descriptive walk-through of the NWFF space. View it in advance of attending an in-person event at bit.ly/nwffsocialnarrativepdf, in order to prepare yourself for the experience.
A number of seats will be held at each show for members of the community for whom ticket cost is an obstacle. If you’d like to attend free of charge, please email María and Paul (maria@nwfilmforum.org, paul@nwfilmforum.org) to let them know which program and showtime you’re interested in!
NWFF patrons will be required to wear masks that cover both nose and mouth while in the building. Disposable masks are available at the door for those who need them. We are not currently checking vaccination cards. Recent variants of COVID-19 readily infect and spread between individuals regardless of vaccination status.
Read more about NWFF’s policies regarding cleaning, masks, and capacity limitations here.

Films in this program:
Generation Impact: The Coder
Seattle premiere!
Jay Jay Patton was only 13 when she designed and built Photo Patch, a mobile app to help kids send photos and letters to parents who are incarcerated. The app was inspired by Jay Jay’s own experience; her dad was in prison for five years and it was difficult to communicate with him as much as she wanted.
(Samantha Knowles, US, 2021, 7 min, in English)
Our Days in Dongshi
North American premiere!
Dongshi is a coastal township in Taiwan, famous for its fresh fish and sweet, fat oysters. Local children learn to be independent from an early age, not only cooking for themselves, but also helping their parents out, only enjoying themselves after work is done. They love riding around together on their bicycles, and sometimes they play by the embankment or watch the sunset.
(Hsiang-Yu Li, Taiwan, 2022, 10 min, in Hakka & Mandarin with English subtitles)
Ball for All
Refusing to allow his Cerebral Palsy diagnosis to diminish his competitive nature and desire to play sports, Nick Weiss paved his own path, ultimately inspiring other youth to do the same. This is his story.
(Philip Tang, US, 2022, 9 min, in English)
BrownWhite
West Coast premiere!
From the perspective of Israeli biracial kids, BrownWhite explores how skin color influences the development of identity. Weaving their lived experiences with findings from academic research, the film reveals their dilemmas around identity in a world that’s more complicated than brown or white.
(Ruchama Ehrenhalt, Israel, 2022, 10 min, in Hebrew with English subtitles)
Brave Girl: The Future of Wyoming
WA State premiere!
Brave Girl is a young adventurer who is just beginning her journey of finding out what it takes to climb mountains. Even though she’s only 6, she has an unwavering ambition to climb the biggest mountains in the world, starting with the ones in her backyard in Wyoming.
(Mark Pedri, US, 2021, 8 min, in English)
Rocks 4 Sale!
PNW premiere!
A slice-of-life look at how kids in the former mining town of Silverton, Colorado stay busy in the summer by “mining” and selling rocks to tourists. Through this time-honored rite of passage, these “rock stars” learn history, social skills, and become little entrepreneurs.
(David Dibble, US, 2022, 16 min, in English)
Abby
West Coast premiere!
Cerebral palsy keeps Abby’s body and speaking voice from working as she’d like them to. She has a profound love for all animals, however, and dedicates herself to nonverbally training and communicating with dogs. Abby’s animals understand her well; better, in fact, than many people.
(John Urbano, US, 2022, 13 min, in English)
