Local Sightings 2024 – Opening Feature: Punderneath it All [Hybrid]

Join us for a live, movie-themed pun-off before the screening, hosted by Seattle’s own Forest Ember and featuring a slate of to-be-announced comedians! Buckle up for not only puns, but also idioms, acronyms, and other wordplay delights.

Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forum’s ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. All doors in Northwest Film Forum are non-motorized, and may require staff assistance to open. Our upstairs workshop room is not wheelchair accessible.
The majority of seats in our main cinema are 21″ wide from armrest to armrest; some seats are 19″ wide. We are working on creating the option of removable armrests!
We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter. Also available at the front desk is a Sensory Kit you can borrow, which includes a Communication Card, noise-reducing headphones, and fidget toys.
The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject!

As of August 2024, NWFF has adjusted its mask policy from universally required to strongly encouraged at the majority of screenings. In the interest of accessibility, the requirement is still in place for Thursday night screenings and Saturday and Sunday matinees; occasional exceptions will be noted on each event’s page.
Disposable masks are available at the door for those who need them.

Puns: love ’em or hate ’em, they’re everywhere–and those who can pun with aplomb form their own idiosyncratic, camaraderie-filled subculture. Enter Forest Ember, pun-master extraordinaire and the beating heart of Punderneath It All, who started a weekly pun-off in Seattle, only to watch the movement bloom and spread to other cities around the globe. The delightful doc Punderneath It All explores why it’s harder to define “pun” than you think, the ethics of controversial comedy, and how language (and, yes, even puns) can be a tool for social change. Dubbed “sweet and touching and funny” by The Stranger, Punderneath It All is a celebration of vital in-person community spaces, those seemingly vanishing spots in Seattle to convene, bond, and have a laugh.

About the Comedians:
Forest Ember
Forest is a Clowntrepreneur, Master of Ceremonies, Mistress of Pheromonies, and has been producing and hosting comedy shows including between Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia for a total of nine years! Forest plays in several activist marching bands, playing percussion, trombone, and her main instrument–the audience’s heart strings. She can be found at comedy and music venues locally and across the country, doing outreach, advocating for disability rights, or at home editing videos and planning the next big thing. Neurodivergent and Queer, she’s navigating a world she believes benefits from more whimsy, and brings it whenever she’s able to.
Nathaniel Honey
Nathaniel Honey is an educator, content creator, and multidisciplinary artist who hails from the Midwest. With a career spanning over two decades Honey has graced stages across the country, delivering stand-up, burlesque, and improv comedy performances. Notably, Honey has been featured at events like GenCon, Second City Comedy festivals, Emerald City Comic Con, PAX West, Bumbershoot, and SXSW. Their material delves into thought-provoking topics, including sex, race, abolition, and even the beloved children’s show Paw Patrol. As a fan of board games and an advocate for collective liberation, Nathaniel Honey brings a unique blend of humor, insight, and social commentary to their artistic endeavors.
Megan Dauncey
Megan KD is a smoke show of a queer comedian coming in hot from Seattle providing sidesplitting, gut-busting, gluten-free mom jokes all over the PNW.
Samuel Irish
Sam is a lovable comedian based out of Tacoma, an artist, and a master of puns and great hugs!
Festival Directory
Presented by Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum, the 27th Annual Local Sightings Film Festival is a virtual-and-in-person showcase of creative communities from throughout the Pacific Northwest. The 2024 program, which runs from September 20–29, features a competitive selection of curated short film programs and feature films, inviting regional artists to experiment, break, and remake popular conceptions around filmmaking and film exhibition.
Local Sightings champions emerging and established talent, supports the regional film industry, and promotes diverse media as a critical tool for public engagement.
