The Art of Phytography: Phytography Workshop with Karel Doing [In-Person]

Sat Mar 22:

All workshops have a suggested registration fee of $125, however we do offer a sliding scale, pay-what-you-can model for those who need that option.

Duration: 5h
Instructor: Karel Doing

About

This workshop is available to those who have no previous experience working with film. It will also be useful for filmmakers who want to learn more about the phytography technique and understand how they can incorporate it into their practice.

Phytography is a technique invented by Karel Doing that makes it possible to create detailed chemical traces of plants directly on photographic emulsion. The process takes place in full daylight and makes use of biodegradable chemistry. During the workshop the artist will explain his technique, placing it in a historical lineage of experimental photography and film while also connecting it to ecological mindfulness. After this introduction, a hands-on demonstration is provided. Participants will create their own images and see the results in projection.

Workshop Details:

  • Date:  March 22, 2025
  • Time:  11AM – 4PM (Participants can bring their own lunch to eat onsite)
  • Location:  Northwest Film Forum Workshop Room (Please note that this space requires participants to climb stairs)

If you have any questions or cannot pay the minimum registration fee and would like to discuss a scholarship please contact derek@nwfilmforum.org.
