The Seattle Film Critics Society’s inaugural Pacific Northwest Short Film Award Nominee program boasts incredible stories that celebrate the creativity, community, and spirit of our region. Chosen by a panel of film critics and programmers, these bold, original, and often heartfelt short films from local filmmakers exemplify exceptional work in cinematic artistry and regional storytelling.
FILMS IN THIS PROGRAM:
Style: A Seattle Basketball Story (Bryan Tucker, 2025, United States, 12:26)
The untold, storied history behind one of America’s most elite youth basketball programs and its humble beginnings in Seattle’s Central District.
A Fateful Weekend (Tony Doupe, 2024, United States, 13:47)
As news of President Kennedy’s assassination unfolds, a seven-year-old boy tries to make sense of the grief blanketing his family and the world beyond. With only a vague understanding of who “the President” is, he observes the somber mood of his mother and grandparents. Yet life doesn’t stop entirely; his little brother’s sixth birthday arrives the next day. A tender glimpse of joy and loss colliding in one unforgettable weekend.
Shelly’s Leg (Wes Hurley, 2025, United States, 16:51)
In 1970, an eccentric young stripper named Shelly Baumann loses her leg in a freak parade canon accident, then uses her settlement money to open ‘Shelly’s Leg’ disco – one of the nation’s first and most consequential openly gay spaces. Narrated by Oscar-nominee, Kathleen Turner.
Charlotte, 1994 (Brian Pittala, 2025, United States, 15:42)
Set in 1994, a young woman (Charlotte) gets a visit at work from her younger sister (Sydney) who has come seeking answers to a growing rift in their family.
Songs of Black Folk (Justin Emeka & Haley Watson, 2025, United States, 26:12)
Leading Black musicians come together for a groundbreaking Juneteenth concert in the Pacific Northwest, creating a historic moment that paves the way for future generations of Black artists.
Ticketing, concessions, cinemas, restrooms, and our public edit lab are located on Northwest Film Forum’s ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. All doors in Northwest Film Forum are non-motorized, and may require staff assistance to open. Our upstairs workshop room is not wheelchair accessible.
The majority of seats in our main cinema are 21″ wide from armrest to armrest; some seats are 19″ wide. We are working on creating the option of removable armrests!
We have a limited number of assistive listening devices available for programs hosted in our larger theater, Cinema 1. These devices are maintained by the Technical Director, and can be requested at the ticketing and concessions counter. Also available at the front desk is a Sensory Kit you can borrow, which includes a Communication Card, noise-reducing headphones, and fidget toys.
The Forum does NOT have assistive devices for the visually impaired, and is not (yet) a scent-free venue. Our commitment to increasing access for our audiences is ongoing, and we welcome all public input on the subject!
If you have additional specific questions about accessibility at our venue, please contact our Patron Services Manager at suji@nwfilmforum.org. Our phone number (206-329-2629) is voicemail-only, but we check it often.
Made possible due to a grant from Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with Sensory Access, our Sensory Access document presents a visual and descriptive walk-through of the NWFF space. View it in advance of attending an in-person event at bit.ly/nwffsocialnarrativepdf, in order to prepare yourself for the experience.
NWFF patrons will be strongly encouraged to wear masks that cover both nose and mouth while in the building. Disposable masks are available at the door for those who need them. Recent variants of COVID-19 readily infect and spread between individuals regardless of vaccination status.
