BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE: Assets & Liabilities
(Zach Weintraub, Tacoma, WA, OR, 2026, 1 hr 3 min, in English)
FILM SYNOPSIS
Zach is a burnt-out suburban father haunted by the impending arrival of middle age. When his family heads out of town for the weekend, he seizes the opportunity to live out a day as his younger, less responsible self. A spontaneous encounter with a fellow skater feels like a victory until an unsettling connection between the two emerges. The result is a forcible confrontation with his own bourgeois standing that shatters the illusion of Zach’s carefree day and sends it spiraling into dark territory. Trailer
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: The Life We Leave
(JJ Gerber, Seattle, WA, 1 hr and 26 mins, in English)
FILM SYNOPSIS
When Washington state became the first in the world to legalize human composting, entrepreneur Micah Truman puts it all on the line to build the world’s first large-scale terramation facility. But when the conventional deathcare industry resists, he is forced to pivot, and must learn to care for the grieving while transforming his business. Alongside Funeral Directors, Brie Smith and Katey Houston, he begins to understand the double bottom line is the only way to truly profit. What begins as an ambitious venture becomes personal as they rediscover human connection, ritual, and legacy. Through intimate, observational storytelling – filmed over 5 years – Micah, Katey and Brie risk it all to create a profound cultural shift around deathcare. Together, they push the boundaries of connection and ritual within a capitalist system that seeks profit and efficiency, reshaping our final act into one that not only tends to grief in new ways but also gives back to the Earth.
