You may not be familiar with his name, but his work is all around you: Piet Oudolf has designed some of the most iconic outdoor spaces around the world, from the High Line in New York to the Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Garden. Five Seasons – as the title suggests – follows Oudolf from Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall again, showing how he approaches his work through the seasons while working on his latest project.

Surprisingly, Oudolf came to garden designing late in life, but found that he had a knack for arrangement and a deep appreciation of plants. Filmmaker Thomas Piper’s beautiful, mesmerizing photography captures Oudolf in his most comfortable element – the garden – as he shares his insight into the world of public and private spaces, where he finds inspiration, and his philosophy on how working with plants creates a greater understanding of life and death.
