About

Acclaimed filmmaker Mila Turajlić’s (Cinema Komunisto) newest documentary is a portrait of her family, her history, and her home country of Serbia, told through the engaging and probing conversations around the re-opening of their family apartment.

In 1945, Turajlić’s family apartment was divided and redistributed by the state government. Turajlić’s mother’s political activism meant that they were spied on from the very rooms they used to own. Now her fascinating mother, Srbijanka, can talk about that “other side” as they have been given permission to open it, years later. A staunch public advocate and voice of resistance against Slobodan Milošević for years, Srbijanka discusses with her daughter their complicated personal and political histories, while reflecting on the divided past they share. Winner of Best Documentary Feature at IDFA.

“Engrossing despite its daunting scope and tangled politics, “The Other Side of Everything” offers an uncommon opportunity to view the shifting borders and identities of an entire region through the eyes of the Eastern European intellectuals caught in the turmoil.”Jeannette Catsoulis, The Other Side of Everything

The apartment’s history gives Srbijanka’s daughter Mila Turajlić a frame on which to hang her story of Yugoslavia and Serbia over the last century, yet her tireless mother is the film’s real, thought-provoking star as she casually details her part in the eventual overthrow of the monstrous Slobodan Milošević and her thoughts in the wake of his departure.” – Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily

“… documentary film allows you to say: OK, there’s a new arena in which we can open a conversation. One that can be more nuanced and subtle and to me makes no truth claims. I’m not going to tell you the truth of what happened. That’s where we really get stuck. Every time someone decides to tell you the truth of what happened.” – Mila Turajlić in an interview with NWFF Executive Director Courtney Sheehan for The Independent
