Fiscal Sponsee – Potato Dreams of America
Potato Dreams of America
Directed by Wes Hurley
Following the success of his Oscar-qualified award-winning short documentary “Little Potato”, Wes “Potato” Hurley is making his feature autobiography “Potato Dreams of America” – a very timely take on the American Dream from an immigrant’s perspective. The film follows Potato, a young gay boy growing up in the disintegrating USSR, his mail-order-bride mom and their adventurous escape to America. This true story is so full of surprises, it proves that life is often much stranger than fiction.
About the writer/director: Wes Hurley is a Russian-born Seattle-based filmmaker/writer. He wrote, directed and produced two features – the queer pop-art comedy musical “Fallen Jewel” and a documentary “Waxie Moon” – in addition to over a dozen shorts. Hurley is also the creator of the critically acclaimed “Capitol Hill” TV series which was produced in partnership with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. “Capitol Hill” started as a webseries on Huffington Post but has since been picked up for television in Europe and Canada. Hurley is Advocate Magazine’s Person to Watch and City Arts Magazine’s Artist of the Year. His short autobiographical doc “Little Potato” (co-directed with Nathan Miller) won dozens of awards around the world including Jury Prize at SXSW and Audience Award at Outfest by HBO. Its companion VR/360 piece “Potato Dreams” has been praised as one of the most innovative and compelling VR films ever made after premiering at AFI and IDFA.
