(Chris Marker, France, 2004, 59 min)
In 2001, Marker noticed several tags of a grinning yellow cat popping up around Paris and decided to research their origin. In his characteristic fashion, the trail splinters off into a meandering treatise on political activism. Witty, intelligent, and entirely worthy of the praise showered upon his earlier work, The Case of the Grinning Cat is essay filmmaking at its most enigmatic.
(Chris Marker, France, 1990, 3 min)
The outspoken cat lover and renowned essayist Marker takes a detour from his complex, layered style to film this quiet haiku for his Bestiaire series. Quiet, and strikingly beautiful, this short is much deeper than its runtime suggests.
