About

John Cassavetes Award Winner at 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards!

Regina (2017 Independent Spirit Award Nominee for Best Female Lead Regina Williams) toils at a minimum wage job while being a single parent to her teenage son Andrew (Andrew Bleechington) and infant daughter Ry’nesia (Ry’nesia Chambers). Andrew, searching for male guidance, is in danger of becoming entrapped by the criminal justice system; Regina, cautious about men but longing for intimacy, begins a fraught relationship with Robert (Robert Williams); and the friction between mother and child threatens the family’s already-precarious existence. The stunning cast of non-professional actors orchestrate indelible scenes of hushed and volcanic emotion as director Antonio Méndez Esparza’s measured gaze looks upon them all in benevolent quietude. Winner of the 2017 Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award, Life and Nothing More is an intimate yet grand story of working-class African-American life.

Esparaza guides us gently into their lives and, in doing so, gives us plenty of opportunity to think about their situation and the difficulties they face, while at the same time questioning our own preconceptions and prejudices.” – Amber Wilkinson, Filmmaker Magazine
