A cinema without borders…

Viewing a film is an opportunity to enter a new space-time different from the world and moment in which we live. Cinema allows us to travel to the corners of distant lands that we often do not see even when we physically visit these places. It can challenge the often unconscious biases we hold of other cultures and allows us to see societies in ways that we never imagined.

Travessias Brazilian Film Festival is our invitation to experience the many “Brazils” that are often unknown or unfamiliar to non-Brazilians and even most Brazilians. To this end, we have chosen films from different regions of Brazil that were produced by women filmmakers exploring the queer, poor, racial “others” of this enormously vast and diverse society.

In showing short and feature-length films, both fictional and documentary, as well as animation, viewers are offered crossings [travessias] — amazing journeys to worlds in which gender, sexual, racial and class prejudices and conventions are challenged by making visible and humanizing these oppressed margins of Brazil.

Um cinema sem fronteiras…

Assistir a um filme é uma oportunidade de suspender o momento e o lugar em que se vive e poder então adentrar um novo espaço-tempo. O cinema nos permite viajar até um lugar distante sem que precisemos ir muito longe. Ele nos coloca em contato com o que pensamos ser outras culturas e com o que não chegamos a imaginar sobre elas.

Travessias Brazilian Film Festival é o nosso convite a um mergulho em muitos “Brasis” – paisagens físicas e afetivas – que norte-americanos, estrangeiros e brasileiros muitas vezes desconhecem. Por essa razão, selecionamos filmes de diferentes partes desse multifacetado país, procurando dar voz especialmente ao cinema potente feito por cineastas mulheres.

Passando por obras curtas e longas, ficcionais e documentais, visitando também a animação, o espectador poderá dar início às suas travessias – jornadas surpreendentes através de mundos que rompem preconceitos de gênero, sexualidade, raça e classe, descortinando outras formas de existir.

The annual BrasilFest heats up Seattle Center with dancing, drumming, music, films, capoeira, traditional food, workshops, kids activities and exhibits.

Festival History:
BrasilFest was created in 1999 by Brazilian immigrants Eduardo and Ana Paula Mendonça with the mission to expose our community to Brazilian arts and traditions during the week of the Brazilian Folklore Day. This is a unique mission, as this day is not usually celebrated outside of Brazil. Read more on brasilfest.org
