About:
Video Poetry is a literary genre presented as visual media to make new meaning through the combination of text and moving image. In this camp, a partnership between Hugo House and Northwest Film Forum’s Cadence Video Poetry Festival, students will write original poems and create short videos to accompany them. Students can expect to view examples of video poetry, write to poetry prompts, make story boards, and video poems. This camp requires some basic skills, but no video experience is required. The week will culminate with a presentation of student work.
This camp is for students entering 9-12th grade in Fall 2023 and will take place online using Zoom.
Scribes Summer camps are offered on a scaled registration rate in order to offer financially accessible programming for all youth. Payments above the 100% rate help offset costs that allow for accessible programming to continue. Donations of any amount can also be made upon registration. Scholarships are also available by filling out our scholarship application.

Instructors:
Karen Finneyfrock
Karen Finneyfrock is a poet and novelist. She is the author of two young adult novels: The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door and Starbird Murphy and the World Outside, both published by Viking Children’s Books. She is one of the editors of the anthology Courage: Daring Poems for Gutsy Girls, and the author of Ceremony for the Choking Ghost, both released on Write Bloody press. She is a former Writer-in Residence at Hugo House.
Rana San

Rana San is an intermedia artist, film festival curator, and video poetry educator with an interest in experimental modes of storytelling using analog media, stop motion, and direct animation. Rana co-directs Cadence Video Poetry Festival, an annual showcase of literary works presented as visual media. She is the Artistic Director at Northwest Film Forum and has recently presented work at SIFF (WA), Eugene Contemporary Art (OR), NYC Indie Theatre Film Festival (NY), and Experiments in Cinema (NM).

Cadence Video Poetry Festival, presented by Northwest Film Forum and programmed in collaboration with Seattle author Chelsea Werner-Jatzke and artist Rana San, is a series of screenings, workshops, and discussions on the genre of video poetry, during National Poetry Month.
Cadence approaches video poetry as a literary genre presented as visual media that makes new meaning from the combination of text and moving image. Featuring screenings, an artist residency, generative workshops for youth and adults, and juried awards, the festival fosters critical and creative growth around the medium of video poetry.
