About

Reel Queer Youth (RQY) is a video production and media literacy program for LGBTQ+ youth and allies ages 13-18. Participants will explore the many facets of filmmaking and will make a film using tech and media they have available. The program will include Zoom meetings and 1:1 instruction, in a safe, open, and fun environment with a professional instructor. We will follow a pre-designed curriculum, as well as creating space for youth to speak about and discuss current events, media literacy, and other challenges that are affecting them right now.

Make a film and meet other young LGBTQ+ and ally filmmakers this summer! During this week-long online camp, participants will explore queer cinema, and create a film using media and tools they have available. We’ll learn about different film genres, such as narrative, documentary, and experimental, and how story and identity can be shared through each. We’ll also cover how filmmaking practices for planning productions, recording video and sound, and editing can be used to create dynamic films for various platforms, from the big screen to your phone screen. We’ll celebrate our stories and experiences and build connections that are so important for creative work.

What technology and supplies are needed to participate?

  • A mobile device, such as an iPhone or Android phone, or other tablet with a camera, or another type of digital camera and a PC or mac. We’ll cover free or trial based app options for recording and editing in the camp.
  • Participants will need to use the free Zoom cloud-based video conferencing service. Zoom meeting details will be sent to all participants a few days prior to the camp start date. Click here for a tutorial on how to join a Zoom meeting.
• An email address (preferably gmail) for sharing and receiving camp info and projects. We’ll also cover how to professionally use file sharing and online video sharing options like youtube and vimeo in camp.
