Six diverse dancers from an acclaimed NY company travel the world, working with youth who have experienced war, poverty, sexual exploitation, extreme prejudice and trauma as refugees. In India, they work with girls rescued from gender violence; in Romania, with Roma kids from one of Europe’s worst slums; in South Korea, with North Korean escapees; and in Iraq, with a gifted young dancer fighting to survive.

Incredibly, they have just one week to prepare the kids to perform on stage, and it is not always certain which young dancers will pull through. But as both teachers and students rise to the challenge, they experience surprising transformations, unlocking feelings and stories in wellsprings of creativity.

This event takes place at Rainier Arts Center!

On Sunday, March 8, join Children’s Film Festival Seattle off-site at Rainier Arts Center (3515 S. Alaska St.) for a full day of colorful Closing Day festivities!

Celebrating the festival’s globally-minded programs in one of Seattle’s most diverse neighborhoods, the morning will kick off with your choice of “Om Nom Nom” or “Lift-off” – two programs that combine breakfast and a film screening – and then continue throughout the day with films for all ages, intergenerational hands-on workshops, and an awards ceremony!

Finally, the entire festival closes out with a live performance by youth from the School of Spectrum Dance Theater, who will choreograph a routine exclusively in response to the evening’s feature film, Moving Stories! Moving Stories follows youth from around the world to showcase the transformative power and universal language of dance.

About the performance:

The students of the School of Spectrum Dance Theater study choreography at an intense level under the instruction of choreographer Eva Stone. The work being presented is a response to the film “Moving Stories” and examines the development of movement from the concept “darkness to light.” This student-generated dance performance allows young choreographers an opportunity to share their point of view.
