In this information-packed, entertaining slide talk incorporating moving images, multimedia artist and culture critic Emily Pothast will read Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) side-by-side with Benjamin’s posthumously published fragment Capitalism as Religion to give analysis of the history and current state of the ubiquitous religion of capitalism, whose theology Benjamin describes as the “expansion of despair.”

Note: The film Metropolis will not be screened at this event, but a brief synopsis will be given for those unfamiliar with the film.

"Capitalism is a pure religious cult," wrote Walter Benjamin in 1921, "perhaps the most extreme the world has ever known."
