About

Maasai Sisters is a documentary film about Kenyan educator and activist, Lucy Itore, who risks her life to rescue Maasai girls from female genital mutilation (FGM) and early forced marriage. After almost bleeding to death from going through FGM as a young girl, Lucy fled her village in the night to escape a forced marriage to an adult man. Now a teacher and assistant principal, Lucy works tirelessly to save Maasai girls from the same pain she went through as a child. According to UNICEF, there are an estimated 700 million women and girls alive today who were married as children and 200 million who’ve gone through female genital mutilation. From rescue missions to family reconciliations, Maasai Sisters provides a pressing and intimate glimpse into one Kenyan women’s mission to educate and empower a generation free from FGM and child marriage.

Q&A with filmmakers and Lucy Itore following screening.
