The only dance cinema in the Northwest, Next Dance Cinemafeatures the best in local and inter/national dance on screen. Velocity Dance Center and Northwest Film Forum pair up to present the 8th annual edition of this program, which offers dance lovers and film lovers alike insight into how contemporary dance continues to expand the possibilities of the screen.
Next Dance Cinema is growing this year to include three days of dance films, featuring some of the best in new dance cinema from around the globe. Next Dance Cinema is a part of Velocity’s annual December festival Next Fest NW (December 8 – 14), featuring performances, film screenings, workshops and special Speakeasy Series events.

A work inspired by The Rite of Spring examining urge, contagion, and sacrifice. Each cut is based on Stravinsky’s original timing cues for Nijinsky’s choreography, thus completing the original polyrhythm. The full-length film debuts in late 2015.

The leading artists in Slovenia are hunted by gravitation. A code for the world the eyes of our generation see when looking back, Dom Svobode is also a code for the spaces of freedom an artist tries to create, wanting to rise above the banality of everyday life, wishing to inflame his imagination and to untie his body.

Born in Zimbabwe in 1965, Chipaumire returns to the landscape of her childhood taking a journey through vivid memories. Shot entirely on location in Southern Africa and including local performers and dancers of all ages. Original music by legendary Zimbabwean composer Thomas Mapfumo.
