About

Once upon a time… there was a tiny hill town in Tuscany that found a remarkable way to confront their issues – they turned their lives into a play. Every summer for the past 50 years, their piazza becomes their stage and villagers from 6 to 90 play a part – the role of themselves. In Spettacolo the filmmakers behind the acclaimed documentary Marwencol turn their camera on the people of this incredible town that continues to play itself, even as their home is trapped in a seemingly inescapable decline.

“Spettacolo stands as a testament to making art in the face of general indifference and worldly decline, and the belief that a can-do spirit and deep-seated cynicism are not mutually exclusive ideas.” – Vikram Murthi, AV Club

“The cinematography alone makes this achingly beautiful documentary worth our precious time. Its gentle, urgent theme – that our high-speed world of instant connection is leaving behind a way of life, and an art form, that forges true human connection – is an even better reason to watch.” – Andrea Simakis, Cleveland Plain Dealer
