The Doctor from India is a poetic and compassionate documentary about the life and pioneering work of Ayurveda physician and educator, Dr. Vasant Lad, who in the late 1970s, exported the ancient healthcare system of wellness to the West, at a time where it was widely unknown and fairly disregarded.
Weaving together interviews, archival footage, and animation, director Jeremy Frindel portrays the determination and passion of a generous and loving man who instigated the “worldwide wave of Ayurveda,” despite personal and social obstacles. Knowledgeable about both modern and ancient medicine, Dr. Lad advocates for “integrity medicine” in which Ayurveda would compensate for the weaknesses of modern techniques.
“I love modern science, I have studied it, I have absorbed it, I have assimilated it…into pure Ayurveda,” he says. More than just medicine, The Doctor from India shows that Ayurveda is “the art of living in harmony with nature, in harmony with the surroundings” to take better care of our bodies and minds.
