Raúl Ruiz’s most ambitious literary adaptation, Time Regained, features Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich, Emmanuelle Béart, and Vincent Perez in an epic, faithful rendition of the final volume of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time and is a truly unique cinematic experience that explores life and memory during the early 20th century.
The film opens in 1922, with Proust on his deathbed, remembering the events of his life through old photographs. Idyllic memories of youth alternate with rich recollections of 19th century Parisian society where the drama of the Great War and the anxieties of the emerging modern era are skewered during spectacular staged soirées and lush, grand parties. In Ruiz’s deft cinematic hands, the film becomes a powerful reflection on cinema’s ability to seize and preserve moments of time. The resulting montage of moving snapshots and feverish dreams make the film the ultimate in Proustian cinema.
