Fiscal Sponsee – Shades of Mindfulness

Shades of Mindfulness

Directed by Malika Lee and Patricia Boiko

Shades of Mindfulness is a 180 degree, stereoscopic, virtual reality documentary experience of an ongoing mindfulness group started for Women of Color.  The group has been meeting since 2016.

This 10 minute VR film welcomes you as a member of the mindfulness group by meeting some of the women and participating in three mindfulness practices including breathing, walking and eating meditations. Mindfulness Based Meditation has social and health benefits for many conditions including pain management and high blood pressure.  These proven benefits were the catalyst for Dr. Kim Holland and Dr. Elizabeth Lin sharing mindfulness techniques with the community.

Shades of Mindfulness documents how medical professionals and institutions can support the whole person by providing mindfulness techniques in a communal environment. Both coming together and mindfulness techniques have been essential for participants healing stress, trauma, and other medical conditions. These themes make this film especially important and timely with the recent impact of the Corona Virus pandemic (social distancing, unemployment, disproportionate impact on the African American community) and the rally cry to address systematic racism and disparities as vocalized through the Black Lives Matter movement.

Whether you practice mindfulness meditation regularly or you are hearing about it for the first time you will walk away with a first-hand mindfulness experience.
