Originally scheduled to be part of our regular Moving History series (back when Seattle-ites could still go to the cinema), “Youth in Rewind” is content created by, about and for children and young adults. Seattle has been the home to multiple filmmaking and media literacy programs employing the power of film and video to engage kids and teens. These programs have empowered young people to be the narrators of their own story, to make an emotional connection and spark discussions about issues that could be difficult to tackle.
Curated from videotape digitized at MIPoPS, this screening will feature:
- 911 Media Arts youth productions (from the Seattle Municipal Archives)
- Seattle City Light has funded multiple media grants for video productions and live performances to teach children about electricity. Many of these were performed and developed by youth in the community. Clips will include two musical plays, Not Too Young to Volt and Zap Rap (from the Seattle Municipal Archives)
- The Seattle Mime Theatre instructs elementary school students in the art of mime and performs a little slap-stick comedy
- A hero who doesn’t exist must save America from another enemy we never knew we had in Remo Williams 2: The Adventure Continues. Created by teen filmmakers as a sequel to the 1985 action film in which a tough cop turned kung fu assassin took down threats by playing songs that made them really weepy about their ex-girlfriends (from Scarecrow Video)
- The Seattle Children’s Theatre performs Snow White and the Seven Dwarves for a special that originally premiered on X (from Scarecrow Video)

MIPoPS is a nonprofit whose mission is to assist archives, libraries, and other organizations with the conversion of analog video recordings to digital formats according to archival best practices.
In order to adhere to social distancing best practices, MIPoPS is proud to partner with the Northwest Film Forum to bring you a weekly series of archival videotape documenting a diverse history in Seattle. Featuring a variety of material and topics, this series will curate a set of clips each Sunday to provide comic relief, historically relevant medical and public health documentation, performance recordings, and much more.
MIPoPS hopes this series will educate and entertain viewers during this time of uncertainty and isolation.
