After a couple of years in the wilderness directing Italian television, in 1975 Dario Argento wisely returned to the genre he helped pioneer. He didn’t just cash in on his comfort zone, though – he created Deep Red, the platonic ideal of that magical combination of roaming cameras, beautiful people and straight razors that we mere mortals refer to as “giallos.” In the film, a musician takes it upon himself to solve a series of murderers perpetrated by a mysterious, black-gloved figure. The whole thing is scored by Goblin. This is either your favorite movie, or about to be your favorite movie.
“If I had to explain the appeal of giallo to a space alien, I would show them the sequence in which David Hemmings madly scrapes away the plaster on a wall in a decrepit old mansion to reveal a child’s drawing of an absurd, violent crime while Goblin’s mismatched prog-rock jam session blares in the background.” – Laird Jimenez
