SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30 11am-6pm PST & SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31 11AM-6pm PST

The first course in our Production Intensives series will introduce you to the materials, skills, and workflow required to turn an idea into an accomplishable proposal for a production. You’ll learn how to read an RFP (request for proposal), and collaborate to create a budgeted and artful proposal that could get you the gig.

SESSION A (11:00am-6pm PST, Saturday, 10/30)

The following skills and topics will be covered:

• Project Planning – Communicating with partners and collaborators by defining a project’s scope and timeline. 
• RFPs – How to read and respond to an Request for Proposal for a video production project
• Crews & Roles – Assigning roles on a film set and determining which your project will need.
• Budgets – Building and setting basic production budgets.
• Finding Alignment – How to clearly communicate your vision for and expertise on a project and how it will tell the story, convey meaning, or reach the audience. 

AT HOME PROJECT

Between sessions, groups assigned to create an RFP together will draft one in a shared document.

SESSION B (11Am-6pm PST, Sunday, 10/31)

Meet again with your proposal group to finalize your proposal and practice how you’ll pitch it to the group. Pitch your assigned project and receive feedback from classmates and the instructor who will pose as the client. After, there will be time to ask questions which may have arisen during the drafting and pitching process.

Required Materials: A computer or tablet which can access Zoom, spreadsheet and word processing software (free versions are available through OpenOffice), and shared Google Drive files.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13 – 11am-6pm PST & SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14 – 11am-6pm PST

SOUNDS GOOD (11am-6pm PST, Saturday 11/13)

Sounds Good covers the basics of production audio will leave participants with a deeper understanding of sound on set.

We’ll start with the basics of what exactly a sound department should be doing on set, and what the priorities of a good sound mixer should be. There will be a hands-on demonstration of all the gear in a sound mixer’s kit, including timecode equipment and boom pole technique. This class will prepare the participant to jump in as an audio apprentice on the RG Pro set.

By the end of the day, students should have a more comprehensive understanding of why good sound starts at the source and how to achieve it.

LOOKS GOOD (11am-6pm PST, Sunday 11/14)

In this workshop you learn and practice the lighting set ups for interviews and portraits. We will focus on getting the most out of location with your resources and the use of natural light to get a professional and clean look for your interview. We will go over basic lighting techniques and what to do when you do not have access to the perfect lighting kit.

Minimum age to attend is 17, there is no maximum age. This is part of a series of production intensives being offered this fall for emerging filmmakers. Those age 17-26 who complete all the workshops will be eligible to join RGPro, a production company that produces broadcast-quality media for nonprofit organizations, local businesses, and institutions.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20 11am-6pm PST & SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21 11am-6pm PST

Learn the essentials of editing in Adobe Premiere Pro Creative Cloud, which has become an industry standard editing software for film and video. This workshop will frame your learning within a professional workflow and offer an understanding of the basic tools, layout, and uses that will make learning the deeper aspects of the software easier. Learn and practice with sample projects and leave the workshop with our guide for continued learning.

SESSION A (11am-6pm PST on Saturday, 11/20)

The following skills and topics will be covered:

• An Editor’s Role – Learning how editors fit into the production timeline and workflow.
• Data Management – Organizing your media prior to and during the edit.
• Project Basics – Practicing with a hands-on project by learning how to import media into a timeline, cut video and audio, and add basic graphics.

AT HOME PROJECT

Edit using provided sample interview and B-roll footage to create a short video.

SESSION B (11am-6pm PST on Tuesday, 11/21)

Share your edit, then receive feedback from classmates and the instructor, who will answer any questions which may have arisen during your process. More in-depth discussions will also cover:

• Strategies for continued learning – How professional editors stay up to date, and planning to grow your skills.
• Exporting and Sharing –  A look at tools editors use to share drafts, collaborate, and get feedback.

Skill Level:

Introductory. Our following two workshops — Intro to After Effects and Motion Graphics in After Effects — will expand upon this knowledge.

A computer or tablet which can access Zoom and shared Google Drive files. An Adobe Creative Cloud membership or free trial are also required. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4 11am-6pm PST & SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5 11am-6pm PST

A follow-up to our Intro to After Effects workshop, Motion Graphics in After Effects will teach you how to modify existing templates to create customized animated graphics and special effects which you can incorporate into your edit. 

SESSION A (11am-6pm PST on Saturday, 12/4)

The following skills and topics will be covered:

• Custom Graphics – Exploring which motion graphics or templates a project may need.
• After Effects Templates – Modifying and incorporating existing templates, including design tips for graphic and color choices.
• Working Across the Adobe Suite – How to create a motion graphics template (.mogrt) for Premiere.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Create your own custom motion graphics template (.mogrt) to practice with.

SESSION B (11am-6pm PST on Sunday 12/5)

Share your motion graphics template (.mogrt), then talk through questions or challenges which may have arisen during your edit. Additional experimentation with modifying and customizing After Effects templates will continue.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11 11am-6pm & SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12 – 11am-6pm

Livestreaming and virtual video production are now essential tools for communicating with the public, and these skillsets will continue to be vital for the foreseeable future. This workshop will provide an overview of livestreaming technologies at an introductory level, covering best practices for running a livestreamed or remote production and providing you the foundation to successfully grow your skills.

SESSION A (11am-6pm PST, Saturday, 12/11)

The following skills and topics will be covered:

• Livestream Workflows – Receiving an overview of basic terminology, as well as phone and computer setup options for livestreaming onto different platforms, including Vimeo, Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram.
• Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) – Learning industry-standard software for livestreaming, including output and monitor settings, managing A/V sources, scene transitions and overlays.
• Additional Software – Incorporating helpful plugins and software into your initial setups.

AT HOME PROJECT

Set up OBS at home and record a livestreaming on your own!

SESSION B (11am-6pm PST, on Sunday, 12/12)

Share your experiences setting up OBS, then receive feedback from the instructor, who will answer any questions which may have arisen during your process. Additional resources will also be shared for continued learning. More in-depth discussions will also cover:

• Virtual Tour of Pound Studios – Demonstrating RG Pro’s multi-camera set-up, along with a review of live sound signal flow and best practices for using in-person livestream equipment.
• Livestream Production – Switching between different cameras, capturing different views of a production as it goes feeds through OBS, and gaining tips for working with an in-person and/or remote team.

Required Materials:

A computer or tablet which can access Zoom and shared Google Drive files. Access to the free open-source program, Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is also required.
