Seattle director Webster Crowell, winner of The Stranger Genius Award, presents his handcrafted animated sci-fi comedy Rocketmen. The film follows a crew of men in an FDR-era job program whose sole mission is to defend our homeland against Communists and giant robots. The thing is, America was never attacked by those forces and the Rocketmen were left at the wayside for 70 years — until, that is, a new threat arrives in Seattle’s airspace. Their hydrogen-powered rockets release hallucinogenic gas, resulting in increasingly surreal and goofy challenges. Crowell was inspired to depict the Rocketmen’s job woes by his own experiences during the Great Recession, commenting on the importance of government-provided jobs. Shot in and around Seattle, the film traverses from Pioneer Square, to downtown, coffee shops and the International District.
