About
The tango is a world-renowned style of dance choreography, broadly considered to have originated in Argentina. The tango comes, in fact, from many places, and is a reflection of a multitude of cultures.
Because of Western European colonizers’ support of the Atlantic slave trade, Central Africa contributed immensely to the creation of tango. Cultural transference between continents and countries produced many new art forms and ideas, particularly in music and dance.
Dom Pedro’s documentary Tango Negro reveals a historical density to the art of the tango, while also placing viewers in a postcolonial setting. The film seeks to unthink an accepted idea by placing an emphasis on the complex history involved in its creation.
