As the Earth Turns
(Richard Lyford, 1938, US, 45 min)
Earth, 1938! The planet is being rocked by devastating climate events. The great nations are at war. And a shadowy figure known as PAX is issuing apocalyptic missives. Two fearless reporters are determined to uncover the identity of the mystery man and expose his nefarious plot, even as their fate–and the world’s–is in peril. No, this grandiose vision was not filmed on a Hollywood backlot: it was shot in Seattle in 1937, under the supervision of precocious backyard auteur Richard H. Lyford. Unfinished and unseen for eight decades, As the Earth Turns has finally been completed and remastered, and the present moment could not be more suitable to witness Lyford’s D.I.Y. Sci-Fi epic.
