Many people’s knowledge of black filmmaking in the 1970s is limited to “blaxploitation” films, but the films of the L.A. Rebellion tell an extraordinary history of black cinema and offer insight into the legacies of Black communities. The films in the series are remarkable not only for their evocations of everyday life, but even more for the revelation of a diverse talent pool and the filmmakers’ political resolve.

The L.A. Rebellion artists took up some of the most urgent social and cultural dynamics of their time, including Black activism and militancy, everyday life and spirituality in order to forge a cinema responsive to the lives and concerns of African American communities and the African diaspora.

Join local filmmakers Shaun Scott, Charles Mudede and Brian McDonald as they discuss radical black filmmaking today and the legacy of the L.A. Rebellion. Conversation will be moderated by Carmel Curtis.

Tonight’s program is part of our month-long film series L.A. Rebellion. During our weekly cinema salons, local activists, filmmakers and scholars come together for free public conversations about race, gender, social and political issues today, as seen through the lens of the L.A. Rebellion films. Read more about the series >>
