About
It was 1972: artist/photographer Peter Beard had begun following Edith and Edie Beale, famous from the Maysles’ landmark documentary Grey Gardens that released three years later. Using unseen footage of and from Peter, the Maysles, Jonas Mekas, and Andy Warhol, director Göran Olsson (The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975) brings us back to a summer in Montauk with the Beales, filled with surprises, guest appearances, and many great conversations captured on camera in their home.
“Not only does the film breathe new life into an American family surrounded by tragic mythos, but it sheds light on a cinematic treasure that forever changed documentary filmmaking.” – Jude Dry, indieWire
“The Grey Gardens mystique becomes even more intriguing with That Summer.” – Jay Weissberg, Variety
