Haptic Animation Amplifier is a new non-profit that supports independent animation in the Pacific Northwest through distribution, events, and archiving. We are lucky to have a vibrant community of animators who share an independent spirit, but the animators across the NW could be more connected with each other and the world-wide animation scenes. Haptic aims to help join these communities, and spread their work far and wide. Come to this launch event to hear from founder Tess Martin why Haptic is needed in our region, what it does exactly, and what the word ‘haptic’ means. Have a drink and meet some of your local animators. Free and open to the public!
PERPETUAL MOTION MACHINE: A BRUCE BICKFORD RETROSPECTIVE | 7:30PM
Bruce Bickford is Seattle’s own born and raised animation genius. Most well-known for his claymation work with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, he still animates or draws basically all day every day, and has an impressive accumulation of independent work. He is inspired by history, mythology and classic hero stories, and yet his films are unlike anything you’ve seen elsewhere. Bruce’s films are unconcerned with our desire for clarity, and yet they are rewarding when committed to. We are proud to screen the NW’s first comprehensive compilation of his oeuvre, including CAS’L, Bruce’s latest long clay film that he was animating from about 1988 to 1997. It has only recently been mastered and completed with a soundtrack and has rarely been seen in its entirety. Along with Prometheus’ Garden, Bruce’s clay masterpiece finished in 2008, we are proud to show some of Bruce’s intricate pencil animations that are almost more mesmerizing than the clay for which he is known. Bruce is scheduled to be in attendance for the screening.

In the Pacific Northwest we’re lucky to have an important history of independent animation, as well as exciting work being made today. But this talent often gets overlooked in the shuffle of general film festivals, or overshadowed by independent animation’s louder and more obnoxious younger brother, commercial animation. This series of programs scratches the surface of the distinctive and diverse independent animation that comes out of our region.
About Tess Martin
Tess Martin is an independent animator who works with cut-outs, ink, paint, sand or objects. Her most recent award-winning films are The Lost Mariner, an animated interpretation of an Oliver Sacks case study, and Mario, a paint on glass film based on an Italian folk song (winner of Best Short Film at Local Sightings last year). Her films have displayed at galleries and festivals worldwide.She is passionate about animation community, and has recently founded Haptic Animation Amplifier, to help support independent animation from the Pacific Northwest. She also runs a monthly animation event in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and occasionally writes about the world of independent animation.
