About
Work with animator Neely Goniodsky on creating a visual interpretation of Anastacia-Reneé’s poetry, using ground coffee and stop-motion animation techniques!
The introductory, generative, and hands-on workshop is recommended for adults, youth ages 14+, and ages 10+ with adult assistance.
It is presented as a part of Cadence Film Festival 2021 (April 16-25).
WHAT TO EXPECT
The workshop begins with a short storyboarding exercise, where each participant will be given a few lines from a poem by Anastacia-Reneé and learn how to translate those words into visual compositions and motion design.
After a demonstration of the process, participants will dive straight into animating and have an opportunity to share their works-in-progress with the class! Time will remain for feedback and suggestions from the instructor, as well as additional tricks and techniques, shown in real time.
Participants are encouraged to continue experimenting with their own “coffee animations” even after the workshop is complete. Finished works will be uploaded to an online folder, so that they can be assembled into a single poetry film which will be shown during Cadence Film Festival 2021 (April 16-25).
MATERIALS NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE
- A tablet or phone with free version of Stop Motion Studio installed.
- Animation Station – A Cut Cardboard box that can fit your paper, light and device [recommended dimensions – 12x12x20]
- Watch this video tutorial on how to set up your animation station.
- White paper
- Masking or scotch tape
- Plastic wrap to protect keyboard
- 1-2 cups of ground coffee to animate with. The grind will have an artistic effect. Medium to course grind is less likely to smudge the paper.
- Knitting needle, chopstick, table knife or something thin to help guide and shape the coffee.
- A small light – Here are some ideas, but get creative and see what you can do with a reading lamp or flashlight. The paper should be bright, but everyone’s light won’t look the same and that is fun! Small light example 1 – Small light example 2

Neely Goniodsky
Neely Goniodsky has a BA in animation from Concordia University, Montreal, and an MA from the Royal College of Art, London.
Her main focus is 2D animated films, but her body of work also includes video installations, paintings, drawings, and collage. Some of her noteworthy productions include ‘Conception Series Season 2’ for the New York Times, ‘The Smiths’ a Seattle University production, and ‘Pearl’ a National Film Board of Canada production.
Her films have been screened at many local and international film festival, such as Animasivo, Local Sightings, Ottawa International Animation Film Festival, Anifilm, Animafest, NW Animation Festival, and Encounters.
About Cadence: Video Poetry Festival
Cadence: Video Poetry Festival, presented by Northwest Film Forum, programmed in collaboration with Seattle author Chelsea Werner-Jatzke and artist Rana San, is a series of screenings, workshops, and discussions on the genre of video poetry, during National Poetry Month.
The 2021 festival (April 16-25) approaches video poetry as a literary genre presented as visual media that makes new meaning from the combination of text and moving image. Featuring screenings, an artist residency, generative workshops for youth and adults, and juried awards, Cadence fosters critical and creative growth around the medium of video poetry.
