About

Representation within film and media for marginalized communities is a conversation that needs to occur in spaces that can help dismantle the inequity. This year’s ByDesign festival serves as a platform to reclaim space and reimage structures for communities of color. The festival will showcase artists whose work and overall being challenge social constructs. These individuals and groups are reweaving and redesigning the foundations for which communities of color represent themselves.
– Mia Harrison, Festival Director

Every year, ByDesign brings together a diversity of people, ideas and creative visions to explore intersections of design and the moving image. The program celebrates artists who combine forms and disciplines to transform our visual culture. We are excited to be joined this year by Mia Harrison in the role of festival director; the programming that we’ve done together focuses on social accountability and increasing representation for communities and artists of color.

ByDesign ’18 features an array of guest artists, documentaries, and presentations that illuminate the roots, currents and future of design in motion.

Festival Director

Mia Harrison, THE BLK BLND is a Pacific Northwest native Artivist (Art + Activist) and experimental poet. In a time where words hurt more than sticks and stones, she uses her art as activism. Mia has amassed years of experience as a freelance writer for several organizations, composing everything from copy to original, research-based pieces. And in her spare time, she organizes art openings, edits short films, and strives to create community. To her, curation isn’t about finding art pieces in conversation with each other, it’s about finding the people.

Lead Production Design

Jordan is a freelance interior designer in the Seattle Metro area. He specializes in home decor and interior architecture, with an interest in product design. He is interested in curating spaces that tell stories about his clients from the perspective of artwork, lighting, and space. His first public design is the No Sesso gallery exhibit featuring work created by Pierre Rashard. It is his great pleasure to collaborate with other young artists from the Seattle area in hopes of building community through productive restructuring and re-building of our Queer neighborhood using art and design.
