About
A classic cult film that flies in the face of conventional screen romance, Harold and Maude stars one of cinema’s most endearing and unlikely pairs. Bud Cort is Harold, a young man bored with wealth and interested in death. And Ruth Gordon is Maude, a wonderful old rascal who can see nothing but good intention in the world. Hal Ashby (Coming Home, Being There) directed from Colin Higgins’ (Four Play) first script. An outrageously funny and affecting film, Harold and Maude proves that love has no boundaries. Cat Stevens provides an uplifting musical score.
Curator's statement:
Dark, shadowy forests, languid, rolling hills, steep, plunging cliffs, and a churning, swirling ocean set the scene for this angst-ridden masterpiece. What better place to explore the existential themes of love, life, death, and the human condition than the misty San Francisco shore? Harold’s despair and longing cut straight to my own teenage angst and I felt this movie deep within my bones. My first viewing of Harold and Maude spurred a life-long deep-dive into folk rock, poetry, and the modern novel which eventually led me up a steep and winding path towards filmmaking.
Nothing quite quells the pain of love lost than putting on Harold and Maude, singing along with Cat Stevens, and letting the San Franciscan fog wash over me.
